Futons have become extremely popular lately, as people have begun to understand and appreciate their style and versatility. Some people are still unsure about what exactly there are though…

Futons are comfortable, padded mattresses and quilts which are easy to re-shape and fold away. They originated from Japan, where they were first used as a form of bedding decades ago. They can still be found in most Japanese homes today, as no-one has yet designed a piece of furniture that is better for limited space areas.

As they have become increasingly popular in the West, they have taken different forms. Outside of Japan, futons are generally taken off the floor and set on top of some type of adjustable frame. This allows them to be used in different combinations to function as beds, sofas or chairs.

Their versatility is a major advantage that futons have over other pieces of furniture. As one futon can function in different roles, it means that those who have them do not need to buy as many pieces of furniture as they would otherwise need.

They can be used anywhere, though they are most practical in situations where one wants to save on space or maximize economy. Their ability to convert to a bed, chair of sofa depending on the situation makes them especially ideal for guests or that extra room that sees various uses.

Since futons can be taken apart so easily, they can be moved to different rooms or locations with much less hassle than other furniture, and the cleaning of them is made easier too, as the broken down parts will generally fit inside a standard washing machine.

In terms of style, all types of colored and patterned futons are available. Even better, the covers on most of them can simply be changed over should you feel like changing the look of them every now and again.

They are filled / padded with a range of materials, so buyers can get a soft and bouncy one, a hard and firm one, or something in between. Whatever the use in mind, or preference of the buyer, there will be a futon that fits the requirements.

Foam filled futons are the most popular ones at the moment. They are lightweight, comfortable and durable, which are the characteristics that most people look for in a piece of furniture.

Those who want something with a little more of a traditional feel are catered for too, as futons with innersprings are also available. These still have built in hinges for flexibility, so they are a perfect hybrid between a ‘normal’ sofa or bed and a futon.

With all of these benefits in mind, it is not hard to understand why futons are one of the most sought after pieces of furniture right now, especially when the fact that they cost less than comparable pieces of furniture is factored in too.

The Economics of a New Bed

There’s no doubt, buying a new bed can be quite costly when the time comes due. With price tags in the realm of $2000 for a quality queen size bed, it can be a bit of a blow to the old pocket book. On the grand scheme of things however, it is one of the best investments you can make. It’s not that you are going to be able to sell it for more then you bought it, of course, but what you will get out of it will be worth it.

It is important to try to break item economics down on a per unit basis in order to compare apples to apples and assess the comparison value. For example, you might want to know how much per wear, per day, or per hour. Food costs for a family can be valued at approximately $10 per day for an adult. Clothing is also broken down well using this method. A nice suit which costs around $1200 might end up at $12 per use if you can find a way to wear it 100 times. Depending on how much you use something, and what it might actually benefit you in the long run, buying a $1200 suit might not be worth it. Of course, everything around you can be valued in a similar way.

Americans are not getting enough sleep these days averaging a little under 7 hours per night. Getting a better quality sleep makes a huge difference on how you act and feel the next day and a quality mattress can help you get there. Over the course of its average ten year lifespan, a mattress will see about 25,000 hours of sleep time per person. That means, for a mattress costing $2000, the bed will end up costing as little as $0.25 per night per person. Getting the extra rest during the night is probably worth the extra quarter!

Coughing up $2000 every ten years can be a bit of a blow. It is the difference between getting to go for a trip to Mexico or not for vacation, and many times people pick the trip. Fortunately, most mattress retailers offer payment plans to make it easier to get into a mattress sooner rather than later. However some of us do not have sufficient credit ratings to be approved for these plans. In those cases, it is a good idea to compare the benefit of a new mattress against the pack of cigarettes or that daily latte and start to prioritize just where we should be spending our money.

That being said, for $0.08 per hour, you might find it is the most valuable and economical way to improve your overall health and well being.

Futon Covers Are Similar To Sunscreen

There are always those things of which people know they should be doing but just don’t get around to. Things like neglecting the use of sunscreen or fixing that dripping sink can cause more damage the longer it is ignored. Futon covers are also one of those things which people should be using but often put off purchasing. On average, a quality futon mattress can last for 10 years or more. However, if a futon cover is not part of the futon system, you can expect to lose half of the regular lifespan.

Most futon mattresses are built up of a cotton/foam composition, which as you can imagine is relatively absorptive. The primary reason for futon mattress damage is from liquids. You may think that you are quite careful and don’t tend to spill on the futon, but there are many other things that can happen which are not always controllable. Being sick is a prime example as sweat and vomit can easily end up on the bed. Since futon mattresses have little air voids within the core, there is a tendency for those liquids to become moldy and/or mildew rapidly. This is why futon covers are considered required.

Mold and mildew are not the sole problem with moisture build up however. While mold and mildew are grounds for immediate discard, small amounts of moisture buildup will also cause the inner core of the mattress to compact and sag. In either the case of mildew, mold, or mattress compaction there is little that can be done to bring the mattress back to life. In addition to a futon cover to protect the mattress from moisture, other techniques can be used to properly sustain the life of the mattress. However, these will not be discussed in this article but can be found on the attached website.

Despite the potential for moisture problems, futon mattresses are really a great value. If a proper futon cover is employed, the moisture issue becomes an unlikely issue. Futon covers will typically cost between $25-$75. Make sure the futon cover you buy is of high enough quality that you don’t feel like you are sleeping on a garbage bag. Some covers will only guard against minor spills, so you will want to make sure that is adequate.

If you have a futon sofa in your living room, there are also many different colors and patterns of covers that allow blending of your sofa into the decor. On the other hand, if you are using it solely for a bedroom mattress, you can avoid paying for the additional colors and designs as there are plain covers that can be purchased which will save you a few dollars.

Remember, keep your skin safe with sunscreen and a futon cover for you mattress!
