If you are the hundreds of others turning to farming our own land. You will need to purchase farm tractor equipment. When searching for equipment it can be as frustrating as when you have to buy a new vehicle and almost as confusing. Purchasing a tractor will be an expensive investment; however, a long lasting one.

Tractors have a fascinating history. In 1897 the first tractor was developed for optimal use and they have been going strong since. This much needed farm necessity has seen many changes over the years. Currently there are tractors small enough to simply mow the lawn to extensive enough to help with a large farm. We haven’t even touch on the many garden tractor implements as well!

There still remains quite a few vintage pieces of farm machinery available; the modern ones are a whole lot less bumpy and do not carry the stigma they did. When one comes across a vintage piece of equipment it is difficult to not let the memories flood your thoughts.

Years ago the only place you would see a tractor would be in the country and then it was a luxury compared to many neighbors who used a horse and plow… They have definitely improved since the early steam powered models. The tractor equipment has improved the ease of farm work and is used for sowing to reaping and any other chore in between. They can now be operated off of gas or diesel and can do everything from plowing one acre to one thousand acres.

Working a farm is a hard job. It does not matter if you are working two or two hundred acres, the day is long and the pay is little, but it continues to be a rewarding type of work. The new equipment has made the work a little easier or at least more comfortable. They come with heat for the winter and air for the summer. Attachments can be added for plowing snow or the field and the ride is definitely smoother.

Farm equipment is expensive and cost thousands of dollars for initial purchase. There are numerous attachments available as well. The compact tractor implements will make the work easier but can scare some off when they hear the price. Many attachments can cost any where from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. The important thing to keep in mind is how much you will use your equipment.

With the economy the way it is, there are many people selling their equipment for way below market value. If you are unable to purchase new equipment, it is possible to find really great pieces of equipment at local estate sales or through an online auction.

Determine how large of a tractor you will need and look through county ads for sales. If you purchase a vintage model, keep in mind that they should only be used sparingly or for show. It is interesting to find an old piece of equipment at a local auction. Most cannot wait to get their new toy home to tear it apart and see just what it’s made of.

Always remember safety when using farm tractor equipment. Children adore these for rides, but caution must be exercised as many accidents can occur with children and large equipment. If you take care of the equipment and keep the maintenance up they will last for many years.

Searching for Tractor Equipment can be as time consuming as searching for a new vehicle. Tractor Equipment comes in a large selection of sizes, shapes and styles. The Farm implements you purchase will be based on your tractor’s size and intended use.

What Tractor Equipment Creates the Best Gardens

Have you ever tried to plant and maintain a garden without a tractor? If your garden has any size to it at all, then you know first hand that even hobby farming is a lot of hard work. Now throw a tractor into the equation and you just turned your full time gardening job into a hobby. With the right garden tractor implements you can grow and maintain a wide variety of vegetables.

Today, most tractors provide a 3 point hitch system coupled with a PTO hook up to make short work of even the most difficult farming and gardening tasks. This allows you to connect plows, post hole diggers cultivators, disc harrows, tillers, fertilizer spreaders, and planters just to name a few, but let’s not jump ahead. Some farming implements are going to be powered by the PTO of the tractor, while other are just connected and pulled behind the tractor. If you have a tractor with a front end loader then you will also be able to connect a multitude of other attachments to the front of your tractor.

The other way to get more from your tractor is to have a front end loader. Utilizing your tractors hydraulics to power a universal quick attach grapple bucket attachment that connects to the loader arms is beneficial. Although these are not normally used for gardening, it is worth mentioning because if you purchase a tractor most people want to get as much use out of them as possible.

So, you may be asking yourself, what implements should I consider owning to create the best garden possible without having to pick up a hoe? There is a basic set of attachments take help to produce a healthy crop, so keep on reading. If you are planting a garden, a garden tractor plow is almost a necessity. A plow allows you to turn the earth and prepare the soil for planting your garden. If you have a smaller compact tractor then it is usually a good idea to use a One Bottom Plow. For larger tractors, a farm plow or two bottom plow is the better choice. This will allow you to plow your garden or field faster if your tractor has the horsepower to pull it.

After you have plowed your garden, you will need to break up the soil until it is suitable for planting. You can accomplish this by using either a disc harrow, or a pto tractor tiller. The disc harrow is simply connected to the 3 point hitch and ran over the plowed area until the larger pieces of dirt are broken up and the soil is workable with your hands. Some gardeners who use a disc harrow prefer to leave some small clods to help keep the ground from washing away in heavy rains.

If you don’t have the time to work your garden over several times with a disc harrow, then you may want to consider owning a PTO Rotary Tiller. These attachments for garden tractors simply hook up to your tractor’s three point hitch and has curved blades that will produce excellent results in only one pass. There are many sizes from large to small to choose from, and compact tractor tillers are an excellent choice for smaller tractors. If you have a large tractor, you may want to choose three point hitch tillers that are as wide as your tractor.

Your soil has now been plowed, tilled or broken up with a disc, and is now ready for a garden bedder. Also known as a garden hiller, this attachment will mound up the soil for planting and basically creates a raised bed for your seed to lay in. Some of the larger field bedders will have a sweep option on the outside of the bedder wheels to pull up the hard spots that are left from your tractors tires in your garden. A garden bedder should be fully adjustable to create wide or narrow beds depending on what you are planting.

Now comes the not so fun part of a garden . . . taking care of the weeds that can strangle your crop. You basically have two choices in this area, hoe your garden (don’t recommend it if you have a large garden and enjoy standing upright) or you can attach a garden cultivator to your tractor. While your garden plants are young and still fighting against any unwanted competitors for sunlight, water, and minerals you will want to get rid of the competition. The premise is to stradle your plants with your tractor, and the cultivator will pull up the weeds growing in your garden. Be careful not to get your cultivator shanks too close to your crop so you do not disturb the roots, but get close enough to pull out your weeds. Once your crop is big enough to shade the area on either side of your row, you are pretty much in the clear.

Pond Building – A Starter Pond

Building a pond can be very rewarding, but it can be quite a challenge. One of the best ways to prepare yourself for your pond making project is to create a simple starter pond. In this guide we’ll show you how to set up a pond in the span of a day.

That’s right. One day.

Why build a starter pond?

You’re probably thinking, “What is a starter pond?” Put simply, it’s a trial pond project that allows you to get used to building a pond. This is especially helpful to first time pond builders who haven’t a clue as to what kind of pond to build and what they need to build it.

“Aim small, miss small” said Mel Gibson in The Patriot. At the time, he was talking about shooting. However, this is the same principle for deciding the size of your starter pond. It’s your first time to build a pond and anything could go wrong. Should problems arise, you’ll be able to handle.

Preparations

There’s a whole bunch of things that you’ll need for your starter pond. Although this isn’t as big as some other construction projects, there are some things that you absolutely must have.

First of all, you’re going to have to excavate your pond. You’ll need some sturdy digging tools and maybe a few friends to help. If you’re planning to use a pre-made shell for your pond, make sure that you dig a hole to match the shell’s proportions.

Pond liner is a great alternative to pre-made shells. Canvas is usually sufficient for a starter pond. But if you like, go out and browse through the different types of liners available in stores.

A garden hose and some spray paint will come in handy when you’re setting up to dig. You can use them to mark the location of your pond and the shape it will be. This allows you to work faster and more accurately than just guessing where you should dig.

Pond water needs to be cleaned and the best way to do this is to install a filtration system. Purchase a water pump and filter and set it up in your pond. This equipment is electrical, of course, so make sure you erect a power source nearby. If possible, put all of these things in an obscure spot so that they don’t disturb the natural look of your pond.

How to Build It

This is a summary of the one-day starter pond:

1. Make a pond plan.

2. “Draw” your pond’s shape with spray point or garden hose.

3. Dig out the pond.

4. Line the pond with either flexible pond liner or a pre-molded pond shell.

5. Set up the pump, filter and tubing for the water cycling system.

6. Fill the pond with water.

7. Activate the filtration system by plugging it into a nearby power source.

And you’re done! It may not be the most beautiful pond, but it’s a pond nonetheless. To make it look more like a completed pond, you can add some plants and, if you want to risk it, fish. Just keep in mind that this is meant as practice for when you make your real pond-making project.

What You Never Knew About Home Wind Turbine Design

Back in the day if you thought about a home wind turbine, what would have come to mind is a large tower with enormous white blades spinning rather slowly. But, with the development in technology and the need for more and more people to become energy efficient, small residential wind turbines can now be erected at home. Even better news for green enthusiasts is the ability to make their home wind turbine, without spending thousands of dollars on contractors.

The science behind a home wind turbine

In a nutshell, a home wind turbine generates electricity by turning a motor. The motor is placed in the hub, on which three or five rotors are mounted, and then placed on top of a long tower. For the blades to spin effectively, they need to be facing the wind at all times, so either a tail (similar to a weather vain) or an electronic guidance system is used.

The generator is basically an electric motor. As the coils in the motor spin past the magnets, an electric current is produced. The power produced is stored in batteries, which are connected to an inverter to change the direct current to alternating current, which can then be used to power your home. The advancement of motor efficiency, is the reason wind turbines have become so popular for home use.

The tower is usually quite tall to help the blades catch as much wind as possible. But in open, windy areas, such as near the ocean, the tower can be a little lower.

Over time the blades have improved drastically as researchers developed lighter, stronger, more efficient blades, with the capability of turning even in the lightest breeze. Back in the day, wind turbines had five blades, and looked similar to windmill water pumps, but recently they have moved to three blades, taking the form of over-sized airplane rotors. Like the tower, the blades vary in size, according to your wind conditions and energy requirements.

What I have been describing so far is the average horizontal wind turbine. But you also get a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT), with large water-wheel type blades that spin on a vertical axis. The VAWT is not ideal for residential homeowners or small business since the blades spin close to the ground and are not capable of catching the stronger, high-altitude winds. Another concern is the amount of bird and bat fatalities caused by these large, blades that are difficult to see when spinning at full throttle.

Things to consider before getting a home wind turbine:

How big is the property?

Home wind turbines tend to work better in open areas expanding over an acre, where few nearby buildings can deflect the wind.

What is the average wind speed?

For the system to operate effectively, it is best to install the wind turbine is areas where the average wind speed is at least 11 miles per hour. You could get away with this by erecting a taller tower, and fix on larger blades.

Other uses for the wind turbine:

If you could use the turbine for other purposes, such as pumping in water from outside, then it may be more useful than you think. This is the reason you see so many windmills scattered over farms – they help pump water from reservoirs to the farmhouse.

Do you suffer from random power cuts?

This is why so many people want to get a small wind turbine in the first place – to keep the house powered during blackouts, and prevent economic losses. Although the wind turbine may not power the house all the time, it’s stored power can be used in emergencies, when the utilities are just not enough.

Answering these questions will give you a good idea of how much power you need, how big the tower a blades need to be, and how much it would be worth investing to start making your own power at home.

The great thing about technology is that it is always improving. So much so that motors have become smaller, efficient and cheap enough for us to attach a few small turbines right on the roof, and produce the same power as a larger turbine on a tall tower.

Although professional home wind turbines can run into several thousands of dollars, it is possible to make your own for a tenth of the price, with components found at home and your local hardware store. Furthermore, the U.S. offers both state and federal tax credits that you can use to offset the installation cost. So not only will you reduce your electricity bill, but also your tax at the same time.

Backyard Ponds – Tips For A Successful Pond Building Hobby

An outdoor pond is a wonderful addition to your backyard, a place to relax having nature close by, a corner of your garden where you can forget the pressure of day-to-day life. Its no surprise then that pond building is becoming extremely popular recently. This article will give you tips to create successful backyard ponds.

1. Published materials are a great source of inspiration. Local bookstores and libraries are a great place to find photo books; and places in the internet, such as youtube.com has a huge collection of videos and images proudly taken by their owners.

2. Inspiration is all over the place. Once you start looking you will find ponds and water features everywhere; parks and public buildings just to name a few. Take pictures of things you like and dislike, so later on, when designing, you can easily refer to.

3. Carefully choose the pond site. Moving an existing pond can be very expensive if not impossible. Water noise and possible insects should be considered when placing it close to the house of to your neighbors. Trees can give shade to your pond but also can be a source of debris. Think of best observation points to your pond both from the house and from the garden.

4. Create a clear style. If your house have a clear modern or classical style, maybe a formal pond is the best option. Examples of formal ponds can be found in public buildings both old and new. Informal ponds will have a natural look and will blend into your garden’s environment. Informal ponds will look like natural springs and small lakes with irregular edges and natural features such as rocks and pebble shores. You can never go wrong if you keep your pond in harmony with the house and garden around it.

5. Addition design points. Consider the addition of water features such as water spitters and waterfalls. If your pond will attract wildlife then it must be informal and with no fish in it. Formal ponds tend to built over the ground with stone or glass walls, as for informal ponds they tend to be built below the ground with nice beaches, rocks and lots of vegetation.

6. Don’t let you budget out of control. An unfinished pond project is not the best view in our backyard. When making your plans to build a pond account all materials to complete it as well as payment for professional help if needed. One option to cut building costs and efforts is the use of pre-made pond kits that can be found on the web or in local stores.

7. Safety always. Take all the necessary measures to make your pond safe for household members and visitors, specially children. Stable surfaces around the pond and waterproof electric installations are some of the safety measures you can take. Also, don’t compromise on the quality of your materials specially your liners to avoid water leaks due to cracks and holes. Water contamination is an extra safety concern, so keep a regular cleaning schedule.

If planned correctly and well maintained pond building and owning can be a very enjoyable hobby. Backyard ponds are a place for families to meet and relax, and you can even find out later that you pond increased your property value.

Do Not Buy Make Natural Power Until You Have Read This!

I am sure you have heard a lot about all guides out there that promise to show you step-by-step how to make your own home solar panels and wind generator. One of those guides happens to be “Make Natural Power”. But does it live up to its claims? And is it the your best option? Here is my experience with the guide.

The only thing I liked about Make Natural Power was its cover. Everything else was completely useless. On the outside it looked like it had all the features, but the advice was very limited and not that helpful.

What I Liked about it:

The only thing I liked about it was that you can eventually build your own solar panels and wind turbine, but it will take you forever if you are not technologically inclined.

Dislikes

* Poor diagrams

The drawings were very poor. They were dull, incorrectly labeled, and not even scaled down properly.

* Useless solar power

Since the diagrams and instructions were difficult to follow, the reader has to make too many assumptions resulting in a low-quality solar panel, if any at all.

* Poor maintenance advice

While I eventually got my wind generator to work, it ended up breaking after 2 months. This could have been prevented if I was given correct advice on how to effectively maintain the wind turbine.

* Delayed customer service

On many occasions we required customer support to help us fill in the blanks. However, by the time we received a response we had forgotten what we had asked them for in the first place. By our experience, you can expect to wait on average 5 days for support.

Verdict

If you are willing to get a cheap knock-off of Earth4Energy, but for the same price, then by all means get the Make Natural Power guide. The book was terribly written, the instructions were confusing, and it was not a pleasant experience for me.

Wall Fountain Basics

Your room replicates your personality; it is a fine sample of your preference, of what you like and dislike. Adding something fresh to your room will create a difference in the otherwise ordinary looking room. Wall fountains can be good options. They have the touch of sophistication and luxury about them.

Wall fountains will look nearly anywhere. They may be a section of your living room garden or dining area. It was probably the Romans who introduced the concept of wall fountains. The water would be piped throughout the walls in the city and the lion would shoot the water. The lion was known as a symbol of power and bravery, and Romans would add the lions to adorn the city.

Even today these leonine figures are being utilized for decorating public areas. Wall fountains have a feeling of nostalgia. Now wall fountains are less expensive which means that you can easily add them to your house. If you want a lion or a gargoyle as fountains, you may include it in your home dcor. After you choose the figure, you can choose the substance or the stone that will be utilized to create the design. Prior to purchasing a wall fountain, you should think of the total space at your disposal. If you have ample area in the living room, the wall fountain with a pane can look magnificent. The wall fountains are available in both vertical and horizontal kinds.

If you own elevated ceilings in the room, a tall wall fountain will appear magnificent. If you have a spacious wall, it is better to keep away from a tall vertical fountain except if there are additional features which you can add later. If the room haslow ceiling height it will look better if you use a horizontal wall fountain. The depth of the fountain is a matter of thought. If it is a narrow corridor, you cannot use a deep wall fountain.

Even if the standard depth of wall fountains is six inches, it will be best if you place a wall fountain with deeper panels in the wall.

Types Of Renewable Energy – 4 Ways to Produce Clean Energy

As the planet’s non-renewable energy sources start to run dry, everyone needs to do their part in making more use of abundant renewable energy instead.

So far we are able to produce 4 types of renewable energy: hydro energy, wind energy, solar energy, and geothermal energy.

Wind Energy:

Wind turbines have been around for millennia, further back than the birth of Christ. Over the years they have been used to pump water, drag boats and grind flour. But at the turn of the industrial revolution, wind turbines were made to produce electricity.

Although many people envision windmills as those ornate ones in Holland or the small wind-pumps on farms, they have been developed tremendously in the past decade. Now wind turbines are able to generate thousands of megawatts of power, and when used on a small scale at home, wind power can substitute conventional energy sources, helping households to get off the grid.

Solar Energy:

Sunlight is the most abundant form of energy we have available, so there is no excuse for us not using more of it. But thanks to extensive research and development, we can make use of the sun in various ways – solar heating and passive solar design, solar electric power, and solar cooking and solar drying.

Passive solar design, solar power and solar heating are some of the the best ways to reduce your power consumption at home – these systems need very little upkeep, and they are also great for the environment. Solar cooking is a healthy alternative to using an oven or stove – the food is cooked slowly so more minerals and vitamins are retained, and no electric power is needed. This makes it ideal for camping and outdoor cooking in the summer months.

Water Power:

Like the ancient windmills, the power of the water was once used to grind flour or to power machines for irrigation.

In modern times the power of water is mainly used in to generate hydro-electricity. This is mainly done is large dams, where water is stored and released through small channels. The force of the water through these channels is extremely strong and capable of spinning large turbines, that then generate electric power. An example would be the Hoover Dam that is used primarily to supply Las Vegas with electricity. Over 90% of our renewable energy is generated with hydro-electric dams.

There have been some social and environmental concerns about building dams for hydroelectricity since entire village and communities are flooded by the dam, and the walls prevent certain species of fish from swimming upstream to spawn.

Geothermal Power:

Most of the time Geothermal energy is harnessed in volcanic regions, where molten lava is rather close to the earth’s surface. An good example would be in Iceland, an extremely volcanic island that generates a lot of its power in this way.

Here, large power plants are built over the geysers, where hot fast-moving steam from the geysers drives large turbines to make electricity. To speed up the process, water is sometimes pumped back into the geysers to make more steam, which is then used to drive the turbines once again, thus making it an endless cycle.

Now that you have read this brief outline of the various types of renewable energy, you can learn more about each type by visiting our website in one of the links below.

Types Of Renewable Energy You Can Use

As the planet’s non-renewable energy sources start to run dry, everyone needs to do their part in making more use of abundant renewable energy instead.

To date there are four main types of renewable energy that we can produce: wind power, solar power, hydro power, and geothermic power.

Wind Energy:

Wind turbines have been around for millennia, further back than the birth of Christ. Over the years they have been used to pump water, drag boats and grind flour. But at the turn of the industrial revolution, wind turbines were made to produce electricity.

You may still see windmills as those small wind pumps dotted all over farms, or the large ones in the Netherlands, but the technology has really evolved. Now the wind is harnessed with large wind turbines to produce thousands of kilowatts of electricity, and can even be scaled right down to produce power for a single household.

Solar Energy:

The sun is the most readily available form of energy there is, so we should be using it to a larger extent. And as technology advances, households are provided with a number of ways to harness the power of the sun. These ways include solar electricity, solar heaters, solar dryers and solar cookers.

Hydro Energy:

Like the ancient windmills, the power of the water was once used to grind flour or to power machines for irrigation.

Today hydro power is used in dams to produce electricity for households and businesses. Hydro-electric power is generate on a large scale where dammed up water is channeled through turbines, which spins a dynamo as it gushes through. The best example of hydro-electric power would be the Hoover Dam, which was built to provide electricity to Las Vegas. In fact hydro-electric power is efficient is popular nowadays that it accounts for over 90% of the worlds renewable energy.

Many environmentalists and socialists are against hydro-electric dams, since they affect the natural forna and flora and can cause the forced removal of entire cities.

Geothermal Energy:

It is normally in volcanic areas where you will find geothermal power being used. In places like Iceland, hot, molten lava is close to the surface, that heats large bodies of water and creates steam for geothermal electricity.

Where this lava comes into contact with water, it super heats it and causes large volumes of steam to burst to the surface through geysers. The pressure from this steam is diverted and passed through turbines to generate electricity. Once the steam has passed through it is sometimes cooled, turned back into water, which is then pumped back into the geyser to make more steam. This makes it everlasting cycle…

This brings us to the end of the various types of renewable energy explored. To find more in-depth information on each source, you can visit our website at DIY-Renewable-Energy dot com.
