Home Remodeling Tips

March 4th, 2010

You need to make sure that when you are updating your kitchen you are making it look great and at the same time, it needs to serve its purpose. Clutter needs to be taken care of and the furniture needs to be placed so you can flow through the room while cooking and don’t have to worry about tripping over things (which can get dangerous). Making sure the kitchen is the heart of your home is important and there are several ways to make sure that this happens.

Wall color is often what most people see first when they walk into a room. The right color can enhance the dimensions of a room, while the wrong color can make the room feel almost claustrophobic. Since the kitchen is a room where a lot of activity takes place, such as cooking and washing up dishes, a brighter color will energize the space and make the room feel light and airy, which is a great quality in a room that is so heavily used. Darker colors like navy blue and hunter green act as appetite suppressants, and while that is great for the waistline, it does not do much for a family meal or dinner party. Colors in the red and yellow families encourage appetites, which may be why “Kitchen Yellow” is such a popular color for this room. More neutral colors such as pale greens and beiges are great to create an airy space that can be dressed up with colorful accessories.

Your kitchen accessories have to be ready to use but also sleek and stylish enough to be seen out everyday. Smaller appliances like toasters, blenders, and microwaves and so on should all be the same color or in the same family at least if they stay on the counters all the time. If you have a stainless steel fridge, oven, and/or dishwasher, it is nice to carry the silver tones over to your smaller kitchen items as well. Keeping everything (big and small) matching is great and will make your kitchen look fresh.

Making your kitchen look put together and also welcoming can be hard but linens can help you to do the trick. Making them the same color may sound like the answer but it isn’t. You need to find two or three colors that go together and decorate that way.

The smallest touches can make your kitchen feel more welcome and add a little bit more warmth. Candles and even pictures in your home and kitchen can make it less cold and people will want to hang out in there with you while you are cooking and baking and having a great time.

Home decor is a must to everyone in making their home comfortable for family. Fireplaces are a great way to warm up a room.

Making The Outside Of Your Home Look Welcoming

February 28th, 2010

If you are looking to increase your homes curb appeal, it is something as simple as focusing on your front door and entryway. This is the first thing that many notice when they pass by or visit your home. A beautiful entry way and a path to your front door can make your the appearance of your home look much different.

Changing the appearance of your entryway is quick and easy. A coat of paint, among other things, is one of the best ways to change its appearance. You do not need to choose a crazy color in order to make your entryway stand out. Painting you front door a complimentary color to the color of your home will do just the trick. For instance if you have a tan home, then a brown door will look nice. If you are looking to add more color to your entry way there are other ways to do so without painting your door and obscure color.

If you are looking to add color to your entrance way then a few plants can do just the trick. Try hanging a basket or potted plant to your entry way and you will be surprised at how much it can change your homes curb appeal. One of the great things about plants in potted or basket plants in your entryway is that you can change them out each season for a whole new look. After you have your plants all set out you can then move onto the hardware of your door. Changing the hardware can not only add a classy look to your entryway, it will also provide you with quailty intruder protection.

Door hardware is another place on your home that you don’t want to skimp. You need to buy, and you will want to buy quality hardware. Remember, like anything else in life, you get what you pay for. Besides the door hardware, you can make a simple upgrade on the entrance lights.

Changing the light fixtures on the side(s) of your door, or hanging in the entryway will also greatly change the appearance of your home. For example, my home had a dome light in the entryway and not only was it difficult to change the bulb when the light went out, it looked dingy and boring. I went to home depot and purchased a beautiful outdoor hanging light and it changed a boring entryway into something fabulous. It made such a difference in my entryway that many of my neighbors went and did the same thing. Your light fixture does not need to cost a fortune to look good and if your are somewhat handy you should be able to switch the light out yourself without any problems. Just be sure to remember to switch off the electricity going into the wiring or you will be paying for a trip to the hospital.

A Few Things To Think About If You’re Purchasing Quality Furniture

February 5th, 2010

Those who desire prime quality bedroom furniture would be sensible to think about buying Amish furniture. This furniture is hand made, and the process leads to unique pieces that will last for many years. While it might take a bit more looking to find a source, with the internet this has become less complicated. There are a number of things you will have to think about when making your choice.

First of all, there are a number of different styles of Amish furniture. If you go to a good internet site you’ll be in a position to see examples of the different styles so you can determine which styles you like the best, which may make it simpler to find the best place to purchase your furniture. Different corporations will incorporate different styles.

Wiki: Amish

Next, you will need to choose what sort of wood you want to have your furniture made from. Commonly used wood types include oak, maple, walnut, hickory, and cherry. Whichever wood you decide to get your furniture made of, you may also want to pick which type of stain you want. In a few cases you are selecting from ready made furniture, in others you can order the mixes that you want to be made just for you, though this could be rather more high-priced.

Unless you happen to live near an Amish community, you’ll also need to check into the shipping costs for your Amish furniture. Different companies have warehouses in different locations, and will charge different amounts for shipping. You are going to need to attenuate the price of shipping, so you may want to search around a bit to find an organization that will not charge a lot to ship your furniture to you.

Of course, your custom made furniture might cost a lot more than the furniture you get at your local furniture store. You’ll have to decide whether you would rather pay rather more for a top quality piece of wood home entertainment furniture which will last you for many years.

Changing The Appearance Of Your Room In A Cost Efficient Way

January 28th, 2010

When you have finished redecorating a room one of the first thing that everyone does is step back and admire the work that was done. Even though you may have spent a little more money than intended and a little more work had to go into the project than you thought, it all turned out perfectly. Loving the room that you just redecorated is the greatest feeling.

There are some things that you can do in any room to make a quick dramatic change. At the top of the list is probably the single easiest and biggest changer-paint. Paint does more with less to change the appearance of a room that it is almost a miracle worker.

First thing that you should know about painting is that you should always use a primer. When dealing with primer you will want to make sure that it is high quality as this will ensure the smoothness and look that you are trying to achieve. If you purchase a primer that is of cheap quality you may find that you are actually spending more, since you will need more coats to get the look that you desire.

Your next step would be to purchase you color paint. Just as you wanted a high quality primer, the same holds true for your paint. Purchasing a cheap quality paint will end up costing you more because you will be faced with one of two choices. The first choice would be to use more coats of paints than would have been necessary and the second choice would be that you may feel it necessary to purchase new paint and start all over again. Both options will end up costing you more money in the end. Therefore, if you want to save yourself some money and time then you should purchase the higher quality paint right from the start.

In addition to using good paint and good primer, invest a few extra dollars on some good rollers and decent brushes. Everything just ends up looking better and being done better when you start with quality products. It is just like anything else, the results you end up with are equal to the level of effort you put into it.

There is a lot to think about when you are thinking about remodeling your bathroom. Bringing A Room Together

January 19th, 2010

Sometimes all a room needs to be finished is to add the perfect accent to pull everything together. Sometimes the great accent is a painting with all the perfect colors or a subject that brings out the theme of the room. Sometimes the perfect accent is a table or a rug, it doesn’t matter what it is but it should be a focal point that ties the room together.

When you are deciding on the perfect look for your room you should start looking one of a few areas. Starting with the decor, paint or the architectural details are all excellent choices. For example a fireplace with a book shelf or mantle around it can be an excellent area to start. You can accent the shelves or mantle with accessories that accent the way the room is built, instead of what you put in it. When looking for themes and styles a great place to start would be the brickwork, wood work or tiles for the room you are redecorating.

Beautiful wood work is a time consuming and expensive and should be something that you showcase and use to the advantage of a room. Don’t cover up the architectural details of your house; use them to your advantage to make the home stand out. Even though it seems like an easy thing to do, and in some instances it is, trim work like crown molding and chair railing can turn a room into something beautiful and functional and exciting. The strategic use of trim, not over using it, can make a room look stylish and adds a decorative and architectural detail that can make a big difference in the appearance and feel of a room.

The way the colors and textures and patterns of the room fit together is not an easy thing to accomplish. Picking out the right colors can be time consuming and difficult, but matching everything together can be done with a little effort and some help from the experts. Checking for ideas in magazines and online is a good place to start, and asking questions and looking at other people ideas can help put new ideas and thought in your mind.

Don’t be afraid to experiment and put things together that are new and that you might not be sure about. The worse thing that can happen is that it doesn’t work and you have to try something else. No big deal, but you will never know what works and what doesn’t work without trying.

The 411 On Bathroom Remodeling

January 16th, 2010

There are many areas in your home that when renovated can add great value to your home. The bathroom and the kitchen are two of these areas. Although many feel that remodeling a bathroom is simple, it is in fact a very tough process, and there are many areas that need to be complete. Some things may cost a large amount of money, but there are a few things that can make a great difference and cost you a relatively small amount of savings.

Some things that can be completed, without braking the bank, include repainting, replacing the fixtures and replacing the facet for an updated one. Not only will these things cost you less to purchase, but they are also things that the average homeowner can complete on their own.

There are some things that can be big changes and involve a lot more work like a new vanity or toilet or tub. New flooring can make a huge difference in the look of a bathroom but it can be a little more involved and difficult. If you are not comfortable with this type of project then it is probably a better idea to ask for some help or hire someone. You can cause a lot of trouble for yourself doing a project wrong and it can be lots more trouble trying to fix the mistakes than just getting it done right the first time. Nothing causes the cost and expense of a project to skyrocket more than having to do it again. Having to redo a project can really eat into the budget.

Fixtures such as faucets and lighting and switches can sometimes be all that a tired bathroom needs to make it look fresh and new. Just adding some accessories and a fresh coat of paint is a big change that is enough to transform the look of a room. Remember to look for continuity and to keep things simple.

Many people get caught up in the latest fashions and trends when they are decorating their homes. This will not add anymore value to your home. A classic renovated bathroom and hip trendy renovated bathroom will increase your home value equally. So save the money and go with the style that you feel comfortable with and that best suits the budget you are looking to work within.

Different Types Of Butchers Block

January 12th, 2010

Different types of butchers board, as used in countertops, chopping boards, cutting boards and tabletops seem to be everywhere these days. This wood — which was traditionally cut from sugar maple — originally started out used by butchers in butcher’s boards and also was in widespread use in meat processing plants.

These days, the material is very popular in home use, especially in the kitchen. There are two basic styles of butcher board; end grain and edge grain. The end variety is manufactured by the process of gluing pieces of wood together in such a way that the wood fiber is perpendicular to the surface itself. Most commercial-grade boards are usually greater than 4 inches thick.

Most full time chefs prefer using an end grain block, because the surface is able to withstand seemingly endless impacts from the edge of a knife. This is possible because the surface absorbs the knife edge, allowing it to go between the fibers of the wood. Consequently, knife edges remain sharper for far longer and the surface of the block is more resistant to gouging and nicking.

Edge grain boards are made in pretty much the same way, which means that wooden pieces are glued together, but the difference is that the surface fibers are laid out parallel, not perpendicular. The board, as a result, is much easier to make and less costly for a consumer to purchase.

End grain butchers boards can be refinished many, many times. Edge grain blocks, however, have a limited number of refinishing efforts within them. Both boards are glued under extremely high pressures. End grain locks are also generally more durable than edge grain blocks. If the board has been built with what is called a natural oil finish, it will need to be re-oiled from time to time.

Take a look at most any new home that has been constructed recently and it’s a sure bet that there will be some surfaces or countertops in the kitchen that feature butcher’s block. Countertops are pretty popular for this sort of surface, and a traditional block with legs will also generally be seen in higher priced homes. They are less expensive and can last equally as long as other sorts of counter surfaces.

Some things to consider before you buy butchers block furniture or cutting boards, is whether it is end grain or not. Generally, end grain makes the best butcher block and is better for using with heavy knives, because, although it is more expensive, it is far longer lasting.

Designs And Installations Of Kitchens And Built In Cupboards Made Simple

January 2nd, 2010

Have you ever wanted to build your own kitchen or a built in cupboard but didn’t know where to start or what to do? Well it’s much easier than you think. If you have the correct tools, plans and a bit of savvy you won’t have a problem. The first step would be to have all the dimensions of the walls, doors, windows and the height of the ceiling. This is important as you will have to design your kitchen in this space. If you measure wrong and you have already built your kitchen units you will have to cut them smaller so they can fit into your design. If you think that sounds like a mission wait until you have to cut the doors smaller. Doors normally have better edging which you can’t just iron on like your common PVC Renolit edging and the doors are often also made of MDF super wood so the edging is machined on not glued on.

So once you’ve measured your kitchen up you can now start doing the kitchen designs by adding kitchen cupboard units to it. There is quite a bit of free kitchen designs software out there so it makes it pretty easy to design your kitchen. A great program I use to do all my kitchen designs is www.kitchendraw.com. It’s very user friendly and has a photo realistic feature that makes your kitchen designs look so real it looks as if you took a photo after you built it.

You’ll be able to see if the kitchen design works once you’ve finished it. If the kitchen is too big for the floor plan you will also see it. You will also be able to identify whether the fridge’ position is correct and if placing it in the door way of the kitchen where all the people come in will be right. The sink should always be under the window otherwise you will look into the wall if you wash dishes.

Now that your design for your kitchen cupboards is done you will have to work out what materials you are going to need to build your kitchen units and what counter tops you are going to use on you cupboards. For this step you will have to work out a cut list for your kitchen units. You have to tell the board shop where you are going to get your melamine chipboard cut and edged what the sizes of your cabinet parts are and which side you want edged. You will also have to tell them what colors you want the melamine to be in. The carcass of kitchens is always white unless it’s an open unit which has exposed sides.

Next you will have to work out how much screws you will need to assemble your kitchen cupboards and also fix your cabinet hinges and drawer runners onto your carcass with. You will also have to buy PVC plastic adjustable legs to level your kitchen with. Silicone and painters mate is also important for sealing your sink and top fillers with. If you can get hold of a nail gun for cheap buy it. It’s one of the best investments I’ve ever made and I’ve never looked back. The nails aren’t strong enough to hold the cupboards together but they are strong enough to keep the pieces of the cupboards in place while you screw it together.

Good. You’ve ordered all your hardware and materials and got all your wood cut to size and edged. Now you can start to build your kitchen. Remember there’s no rush. So take your time and work carefully. It’s quite a schlep and takes up allot of your time if you make a mistake. Rather get it right first time.

Once you’ve built all the kitchen units you can place them in the floor plan of your kitchen. Make sure you level them perfectly and start from the highest point of the floor in the kitchen. If you kitchen cupboards aren’t level your door will go skew. Don’t get a fright and think your cabinet is out of square.

Once you’ve placed all your kitchens units into your kitchens design you can hang the cabinet doors on the cupboard’s carcass and fit the counter top. After you’ve cut out the hole for the sink don’t forget to seal the edges with silicone. Remember that water gets in everywhere and if it get’s into contact with chipboard the chipboard swells up the Weat-bix.

January 2nd, 2010

Are you tired of finding some place to keep your new crockery set, your collection of kitchen napkins that you recently picked up at a cheap sale? Do you feel that the things are just not in place after every cleaning? Are there too many kitchen appliances? And more over the corners of the kitchens need some space management? Well, I think it’s time for some space management. The solution to all cluttered problem is just one- you need a cabinet for your kitchen!

Kitchen cabinets not only hide all the clutter but enhance the entire feel of your kitchen. They carry with them both aesthetics and practicality. From the simple, traditional shelves to the much attractive furniture piece, they have for sure come a long way. The options are numerous and you can easily pick one of your choices- in color, shape, design and wood. Take care not to get carried away, overlooking the budget.

5 points that need closer examination and you are closer to your picture of Kitchen Cabinet!

Kitchen cabinets have made a place for themselves and are often indispensable. But the many options available really leave you indecisive. Consider the following points and it will be easier to select the one that you are looking for. So quickly grasp these and get started.

* Count on the dos and don’ts as told by one of your friends who recently went through a similar process of selecting a kitchen cabinet. This way you are sure to gather a few great tips. Go ahead, and have a word with her.

* Are you married or single? Oh, it’s just a plain question to help you decide on the requirement of your cabinet. Married and with children can put a test on these cabinets. You need to concentrate more on functionality than the just stylish looks.

*Remember to go with the flow of your kitchen – the material, look, finish; basically the decor has to be well maintained.

* Is your old cabinet in good shape? Then you must consider about refinishing it rather than a whole new process. This saves money and time as well.

* Never compromise on quality; you will soon have to start from the scratch again and I am sure you wouldn’t want this to happen.

* If you don’t really want to go overboard, then go for the ready or stock cabinets which are available at the home stores.

The three categories of kitchen cabinets; Stock, Semi-custom and Custom.

1. The stock cabinets come ready for the stocks to be stocked in. They are the inexpensive category as compared to custom cabinets. They are pre designed by the manufacturer and your choice will be met in general without any specifications of sizes, shapes and colors. The quality is however good as they are catered to bulky demands with advanced equipments.

2. The next category is the semi-custom kind, where the clients are allowed to choose certain of their ideas – finish, moldings, colors…so on. You can expect the prices to be much higher than the stock cabinets.

3. The other name for custom cabinets can be the dream kitchen, where each and every detail is taken care of as per your need. You can ask for a specific design or fill in the gaps in your kitchen. All are a welcome change. This one better suits those who are ready to spend some money liberally and are really interested in an exorbitant touch with the flow of the rest of the house. Paying attention to every minutest detail of wood work and architecture as a whole can be asked for. No doubt, this is the most expensive choice.

Evaluate well your kitchen, articulate what you like and what you don’t like and then you will end up being very close to your own requirement. And if you really want to get it at an envious price, keep your eyes open to some of the best deals happening in the nearby home stores. You can definitely design one for your needs or go for pre designed one, whatever is your choice, a well-done, uncluttered kitchen awaits you!

Opt For a Vinyl Table Cover In Your Kitchen

December 28th, 2009

Everyone wants their dining room or kitchen table to look great. We make the extra efforts of buying nice silverware and glassware, and we’ll usually adorn our table with some nice trimmings too.

As a result, choosing a reliable tablecloth is integral in making sure that you achieve this goal. My personal favorite is the vinyl tablecloth, and I’ll go into the reasons within this article. Hopefully your appreciation for this style will be on par with mine.

I should probably begin this discussion by pointing out some of the things that a typical tablecloth leaves you worrying about. For one, they’ll stain very frequently. If you have a white cotton table covering, for example, a wine stain could easily ruin it.

Many stains can thankfully be removed, but only after a tedious process that might involve taking your tablecloth to the dry cleaners, or hand washing it after applying some special solution. No one wants to deal with these things, especially when there are extra expenses involved.

Any household that has young children knows very well how often stains can occur. Even homes without kids are bound to get the inevitable drink spill. Something like a drop tomato sauce would usually end up ruining our tablecloth in the past.

As far as a vinyl tablecloth is concerned, the nuisances mentioned above are virtually nonexistent. One great benefit that comes with the territory is the ease with which spills can be dealt with. A wet sponge, soap, and a paper towel generally does the trick.

Then when it comes to drink spills, I no longer need to worry about the integrity of my table. Vinyl really gathers all of the liquid so that it’s easy to manage. I can practically sweep the liquid off the surface of the table.

As for the tugging children issue, there’s no need to worry here. By going with a fitted vinyl tablecloth, you can easily avoid the risk of spillage that comes with your traditional table covers.
