The Evolution Of The Dining Table

The tabula is a word that has been used for more than 2000 years. It is Latin for plank, board, or level top piece. In Spanish, tabula is known as mesa which is derived from another Latin word: mensa. In Old English, tabula is known as bord, which through years of evolution eventually became table. Tables come in all sizes and shapes depending on how they are used. Yet no matter what they look like, they are built for the purpose of supporting objects or placing them away from the ground. Before tables, humans may have just placed their objects on rocks or directly on the floor or ground.

The earliest known tables were first used by, not surprisingly, by the pharaohs and the Chinese. The ones that the pharaohs used were little more crude and were more like small tables or stools than tables as we know today, and they were made from metal or stone. They were used generally for placing food. The Chinese used their tables for writing, painting and eating, and they were made out of wood. The Chinese design was usually shorter and this enabled the user to sit on the floor and use the table. The Chinese were most likely to use the table for eating, where people would sit opposite from each other and do their business. Later on this was copied by the Japanese, Koreans and so on and so forth.

The development in table technology proceeded also first among the Greeks then the Romans. Both cultures used tables primarily for eating purposes. Greeks, however, developed tables that could be stored beneath beds. They used metal, marble, or wood to make these tables. Romans, on the other hand, made very large tables such that these ones needed to be supported by 6 legs. They called them Mensa Lunata, moon tables, which aptly described their semi-circle shapes.

Who knows but it wouldn’t be least bit surprising if the “modern” farm house table, originated from the Mensa Lunata, because what both have in common is size. The classic farm house tables were originally big, seating 12 to 14, and they were built out of oak or pine, because of their easy availability. They usually have a rustic finish so as to be able to endure the tough and rugged lifestyle of the farm.

For many people in farms then, they chose substance over style in their tables. Such tables commonly came in rectangular shape but smaller ones were sometimes square or circular.
